Skyscrapers around the world are ranked by height. But what is a skyscraper, or what counts as a building? In 1969, the international non-profit organization by the name of Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), set the standard by announcing “The World’s Tallest Building”. Only buildings with occupiable floors – in other words, a floor that can be used – are counted, which means that non-building structures and towers don’t count! The Council maintains a list of the world’s top 100 tallest completed buildings and has four criteria: (1) the height to the structural or architectural top, (2) the height to the floor of the highest occupied floor, (3) the height to the top of the roof (although this was removed around 2009, per SOURCE), and (4) the height to the top of any part of the building.
In 1996, the world’s tallest building was defined by the height to the top of the tallest architectural structural element which included spires but not antennae. What’s the difference? Spires are considered vital parts to the design of buildings. Changes made by adding spires would substantially change the appearance and the design of the building. However, antennas can be added and removed without these consequences. Later in the 90s, architects and builders of the world’s most popular buildings became rivals, such as the Bank of Manhattan and the Chrysler Building, that added spires to make them more competitive.
